About

Eugen Michael Friedrich Weidmann was a German criminal convicted of killing six people between July and November 1937, crimes committed together with two accomplices, Roger Million and Jean Blanc. A former prisoner for theft, he and his accomplices set up a scheme to lure victims—offering rides or employment—and took them to remote locations where they were shot or strangled; the victims included foreigners and local residents, among them the American dancer Jean de Koven.

The group was exposed after Weidmann left a calling card in the office of one of the victims; arrested, he confessed and implicated his partners. At trial, Weidmann was the only one sentenced to death; Million’s sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment and Blanc received a lesser punishment.

Weidmann became notorious as the last person publicly guillotined in France, an execution carried out in Versailles in 1939. The negative reaction to the crowd’s behavior influenced changes in how executions were conducted in the country, moving them inside prisons and contributing to the public debate that preceded France’s eventual abolition of the death penalty.
