About

Eugene Joseph “Gene” McCarthy was an American politician, professor and author who served in the House of Representatives (1949–1959) and the U.S. Senate (1959–1971). Over his career he became known as a liberal voice within the Democratic Party, wrote several books on politics and economics, and commented on American public life.

His national prominence crystallized in 1968, when he challenged President Lyndon Johnson in the New Hampshire primary on a platform strongly opposed to the Vietnam War. McCarthy’s unexpectedly strong showing there revealed deep divisions within the Democratic Party and helped prompt Johnson’s decision not to seek re-election, as well as influencing later changes to delegate-selection procedures.

Although he affected the national debate and ran for the presidency through various routes on several occasions, McCarthy never won his party’s nomination. He also remained intellectually active: he published memoirs, political essays and even poetry, leaving a legacy as a critic of foreign-policy choices and a proponent of democratic reforms in party processes.
