About

Felix Schadow was a 19th‑century German painter from an influential family of artists in Berlin. The son of Johann Gottfried Schadow and half‑brother of Wilhelm and Rudolf von Schadow, he received early artistic encouragement, trained in his father’s studio, and later refined his skills at academies and with teachers such as Julius Hübner and Eduard Bendemann.

Settled in Dresden in the 1840s, he produced religious and domestic works that engage with the academic tradition and genre painting; the best‑known example is The Christ with Martha and Mary (1841), now held at Schloss Charlottenburg. His painting shows affinities with Dutch models and with the aesthetic climate of late Romanticism and German historicism.

He married Eugénie D’Alton‑Rauch in 1852, maintaining ties with other artistic families, and had several children. He died in Berlin in 1861 and was buried in the Dorotheenstadt cemetery. His legacy places him as a secondary figure in the German academic scene of his time, preserved in collections and bibliographic references on 19th‑century art.
