About
Ferdinando de’ Medici was the heir to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and a central figure in musical patronage in Florence at the turn of the 18th century. As Grand Prince, he devoted himself to the arts and to assembling a collection of instruments, amassing more than seventy pieces and attracting renowned composers and performers to the family’s courts and villas. Under his protection worked figures such as Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti, Bernardo Pasquini and others, and it is likely that Georg Friedrich Händel performed at events he sponsored.
Ferdinando’s decisive support of Bartolomeo Cristofori enabled the development of new keyboard instruments; among them, around 1700, the piano emerged — an invention that found in the Medici court a favorable environment for early experimentation and dissemination. In addition to music, he sponsored exhibitions and painting collections, contributing to Florence’s cultural life.
Despite his cultural standing, his private life and the question of succession were marked by disappointments: an unhappy, childless marriage and his death before he could accede to the throne. The sterility of the Medici line contributed, decades later, to the loss of Tuscany’s independence. Ferdinando is remembered above all as a patron who helped make Florence a musical center.
