About

Francesco de Sanctis was an Italian literary critic, philologist, and politician, a leading figure in nineteenth-century Italian literary historiography and criticism. Renowned for his teaching and prolific critical output, he taught and lectured in cities such as Turin, Zurich, and Naples, and served several times as Minister of Public Instruction after Italian unification. His intellectual life combined academic work, political engagement, and advocacy for educational reform.

As a critic, De Sanctis published foundational works — among them Storia della letteratura italiana and numerous critical essays on Dante, Petrarch, Leopardi, and contemporary authors — that established methods of historical and aesthetic analysis applied to the national literature. He also became known for studies of realism and for critical readings of European writers like Émile Zola.

Influential as a teacher, he trained significant pupils, notably Benedetto Croce, and left a lasting mark on Italian literary criticism and aesthetics. His work, collected in several posthumous editions and anthologies, remains a reference for studies of the formation of the literary canon and the cultural history of the Risorgimento.
