About

Fredric March, born Ernest Frederick McIntyre Bickel, was one of the most respected American film and stage actors of the first half of the 20th century. Known for his versatility and dramatic presence, he won two Academy Awards for Best Actor (for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Best Years of Our Lives) and two Tony Awards, becoming the only performer to win multiple times the major U.S. awards for both the stage and film.

His career moved between Broadway and Hollywood: he debuted on the stage in 1926, signed with Paramount at the end of the 1920s, and maintained an independent stance toward the studio system, choosing roles with considerable freedom. Notable works include The Royal Family of Broadway, Les Misérables, Anna Karenina and Inherit the Wind, the latter cited as one of the great roles of his artistic maturity.

Beyond his body of work, March was known for collaborations with important playwrights and filmmakers such as Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan, and for his long personal and professional partnership with actress Florence Eldridge. His legacy is that of an actor with wide dramatic range who balanced stage and screen careers and influenced subsequent generations of performers.
