Fritz Rumpf

About

Fritz Rumpf (Friedrich Heinrich Rumpf) was a German painter whose activity went beyond artistic production to encompass an intense cultural and civic life. Trained at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt and at the academy in Kassel, he became part of Berlin’s vibrant scene, maintaining an extensive network of friendships with figures such as Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann and Peter Behrens. His work favored landscapes and architectural subjects with Baroque and Rococo influence, inspired by the settings of Potsdam and Würzburg, where he at times took up residence.

Through family inheritances, Rumpf kept a large villa in Potsdam that became a meeting place for artists and intellectuals; there he hosted cultural salons and welcomed figures of German modernism. He was also a collector and patron of the arts: he served as a municipal adviser responsible for the preservation of the urban heritage and was one of the leading figures in the founding of the Potsdam museum and in the development of local cultural initiatives.

His legacy combines his pictorial output with a significant role as patron and cultural organizer, contributing to the revitalization of the artistic scene around Potsdam and to the preservation and promotion of the local artistic heritage.
