About

Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, known as Caligula, was Roman emperor from AD 37 to 41, a member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and the adoptive grandson of Augustus. Born into a highly prestigious family—as the son of the general Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder—he ascended the throne at 24 after the death of Tiberius. His brief but noteworthy reign is recorded by later sources associated with the aristocracy and the Senate, which offer contrasting accounts of his character and actions.

Early in his rule there are reports of popular measures, generosity, and investment in public works; later narratives increasingly portray him as autocratic, extravagant, and violent. He sought to concentrate imperial power, promoting large engineering projects in Rome—including aqueducts and public buildings—and expanding control over provinces, such as the incorporation of Mauretania.

Politics and public image were central to his tenure: he sought imperial worship and clashed with the Senate and with military factions. In AD 41 he was assassinated in a conspiracy involving the Praetorian Guard, senators, and courtiers, an episode that ended the direct male line of the Julii and accelerated struggles over his successor, with lasting consequences for the dynasty’s stability.
