About

Gale Storm, stage name of Josephine Owaissa Cottle, was an American actress and singer whose career spanned film, radio and television in the 1940s and 1950s. Launched by a radio contest that earned her a film contract, she appeared in dozens of low‑budget studio productions—especially at Monogram Pictures—where she became a top star in musical comedies, westerns and dramas, including It Happened on Fifth Avenue and The Underworld Story.

In the early 1950s Storm won television audiences as the star of My Little Margie (126 episodes) and later The Gale Storm Show (143 episodes), series that cemented her image as a friendly, approachable leading lady. At the same time she built a successful recording career: six of her songs reached the top 10, the biggest hit being her version of “I Hear You Knockin’,” which climbed to number two on the Billboard chart in 1955.

Her career also included appearances on variety programs, tours of venues such as Las Vegas, and occasional TV guest spots in later decades. In 1981 she published an autobiography in which she recounted her struggle with alcoholism, and she remained active at conventions and nostalgia events, remembered as an icon of postwar American popular entertainment.
