About
Gangsta Boo, stage name of Lola Chantrelle Mitchell, was an American rapper associated with the Memphis hip-hop movement. She was the only woman in the group Three 6 Mafia, a collective that influenced Southern hip hop and horrorcore in the 1990s, and she built a solo career characterized by hard-edged lyrics and a forceful presence in the regional rap scene.
Her debut solo album, Enquiring Minds (1998), was commercially successful, charting on Billboard and producing the single "Where Dem Dollas At!?" She followed with Both Worlds *69 (2001) and Enquiring Minds II: The Soap Opera (2003), along with several mixtapes and collaborations with Southern hip-hop artists, which established her image as an assertive, masculine-styled voice in a predominantly male environment.
Boo left Three 6 Mafia after the album When the Smoke Clears, citing financial and religious differences. Throughout her career she remained significant for her contributions to the Memphis scene and for influencing later generations of female rap artists.
She was found dead at her home on January 1, 2023, at age 43; press reports suggested involvement of substances in the incident, but official determinations about the final cause varied during investigations.
