About

George Lawrence Mikan Jr. was one of the founding figures of American professional basketball, dominant as a center in the 1940s and early 1950s. At 2.08 m with a commanding physical presence, Mikan excelled at rebounding, shot‑blocking and an ambidextrous hook shot that made him virtually unstoppable near the basket, redefining the role of big men in the game.

His career produced seven championships across the NBL, BAA and NBA; he led the league in scoring three times, played in the first All‑Star Games and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame (1959). The steadiness of his performance and his clear technical and physical superiority prompted rule changes in the sport, including reforms that helped lead to the shot clock.

After retiring as a player, Mikan contributed institutionally to basketball—he was one of the founders of the American Basketball Association (ABA) and served as its commissioner—and later pursued legal battles on behalf of retired players. His legacy is visible in public tributes and in the statue erected in his honor at the entrance to the Minnesota Timberwolves’ arena.
