About
George Platt Lynes was an American photographer active in the 1930s and 1940s, known for his refined aesthetic in fashion, portrait, and commercial photography. He worked for magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Town & Country, producing notable covers and editorials — including images of model Lisa Fonssagrives — and documented ballet companies led by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine.
Alongside his editorial career, Lynes produced a private body of nudes and homoerotic photographs that circulated discreetly for decades. Much of this archive was entrusted to the Kinsey Institute, where it became an important resource for studies of sexuality in the United States and helped preserve a less public side of his work.
Part of a cosmopolitan circle that included artists and intellectuals such as Gertrude Stein, Jean Cocteau, Katherine Anne Porter, and Monroe Wheeler, Lynes moved between New York, Paris, and Los Angeles. His photography combined technical rigor and theatrical sensitivity, leaving an influential legacy for fashion photography and the history of queer imagery in the twentieth century.
