About
George Wellington Van Tassel was an author, inventor, and a central figure in the American contactee movement from the 1950s through the 1970s. A former mechanic and flight inspector for aerospace firms such as Douglas, Hughes, and Lockheed, Van Tassel left the industry to live in the Mojave Desert, where he built a center of spiritual and technical activity around the rock known as Giant Rock.
Beginning in 1953 he organized meditation meetings and said he received communications from extraterrestrial visitors, also claiming knowledge of human rejuvenation. Based on these revelations, he designed and began building the Integratron, an experimental dome he described as an apparatus for research into time, antigravity, and life extension, inspired by ideas of Nikola Tesla and others.
Between 1953 and 1971 he hosted the annual Giant Rock Interplanetary Spacecraft Convention, an event that drew thousands of people and gathered the leading contactees of the era. He also founded organizations such as The Ministry of Universal Wisdom and published periodicals to promote his theories.
The Integratron remained unfinished at Van Tassel’s death in 1978, but his influence endures in ufological culture and in alternative tourism around Giant Rock, where his proposals continue to attract interest for sound, healing, and esoteric experiences.
