About

George Washington Adams was an American lawyer and politician, a member of the prominent Adams family and the eldest son of John Quincy Adams, the future sixth President of the United States. A Harvard graduate, he practiced law briefly before turning to public life in Massachusetts. In 1826 he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives and, in 1828, joined the Boston Common Council, where he worked on municipal matters.

His public career was also marked by a notable personal episode: he published a civic address in 1824 and, years later, became involved in family controversies and private scandals that drew contemporary press attention. Historical accounts indicate problems with alcoholism and delirious behavior in the final months of his life.

Adams disappeared while traveling by sea in 1829; personal items were found on deck and his body was later recovered on the shore, circumstances that led contemporaries and historians to conclude he died by suicide. His legacy is understood within the context of the Adams political dynasty and the personal tensions that contrasted with his family's public stature.
