About

Georges Alexandré Krins was a Belgian violinist who was part of the three‑musician ensemble that performed at the À La Carte Restaurant and the Café Parisien aboard the RMS Titanic. Hired through the agency C.W. & F.N. Black, which supplied musicians for transatlantic liners, Krins was traveling in second class on the ship’s maiden voyage.

When the ship struck an iceberg on 14 April 1912, Krins and the other musicians chose to stay on board and played while crew and passengers boarded the lifeboats. Survivor accounts highlighted the ensemble’s collective effort, which continued to play to calm passengers until the final moments.

The Titanic’s group of eight musicians — formed from two ensembles that alternated social duties on board — has been widely recognized for the heroism and courage shown during the disaster. Krins died in the sinking, and, as with several of his fellow musicians, his memory became associated with an act of compassion and professional dedication under extreme circumstances.
