About

Georges Loinger was a physical-education teacher and a prominent French Resistance member of Jewish origin, known for his role in saving Jewish children during World War II. Trained in physical education, he worked as a teacher and instructor for the Éclaireuses et Éclaireurs Israélites de France (Jewish Scouts of France), organizing activities and shelter for young refugees before the conflict. His ties to the Oeuvre de secours aux enfants (OSE) and to local contacts enabled him to create protection networks and routes for vulnerable minors.

Mobilized and imprisoned at the start of the war, Loinger escaped and joined the Resistance, using the cover of official movements to operate in the Auvergne region and later in Rhône-Alpes. Together with collaborators and family members, he coordinated convoys across the Annemasse border to Switzerland, actions that helped hundreds of children escape — part of an effort that assisted about 1,200 minors.

After the war, he worked to facilitate the emigration of survivors to Mandatory Palestine and managed the French branch of an Israeli shipping company. Honored for his service, he received high decorations, including the Commandership of the Legion of Honour and the Médaille de la Résistance. He lived to 108 and is remembered for his humanitarian legacy and his defense of the Jewish community.
