About

Georges Perec was a French writer known for his formal innovation and the memoir-like quality of his work. A member of the Oulipo group, he worked as a novelist, essayist, filmmaker and documentarian, exploring themes such as absence, loss and identity, often through language games and formal constraints.

His literary career includes emblematic titles: Les Choses (Things: A Story of the Sixties), awarded the Prix Renaudot, and La Vie mode d'emploi (Life: A User’s Manual), the 1978 masterpiece that earned him the Prix Médicis and established his renown. That novel weaves together stories and literary allusions within a complex structure inspired by chess moves and writing constraints.

Perec also became notable for concrete experiments with language, such as La Disparition, a full lipogram written without the letter “e”, and Les Revenentes, a univocalic text using only the vowel “e”. He also worked in film—the adaptation of Un Homme qui dort received the Prix Jean Vigo—and produced wordplay for publications such as Le Point.

Perec’s work remains influential for its combination of formal rigor, linguistic inventiveness and a pronounced autobiographical sensibility, situated in the collective memory of the Second World War.
