About

Giacomo Rondinella was an Italian singer and actor, best known for his postwar Neapolitan repertoire. The son of cicli di cantanti e attori napoletani, he rose to fame after winning a voice contest promoted by Radio Napoli in 1944 and went on to record hits such as "Munasterio 'e Santa Chiara" and "Malafemmena," the latter of which became internationally associated with his voice. His recording and stage career produced a large discography of 78 rpm records and appearances in prominent theatrical revues.

In film, Rondinella became a frequent presence from the late 1940s, alternating sentimental melodramas with higher-profile films directed by figures such as Roberto Rossellini. His physical looks and charisma made him attractive to popular productions, leading him to appear in many films each year during the 1950s.

He also took part in Italian festivals and music competitions — including the Festival di Sanremo (1962), Cantagiro and various civic events — and lived for years in Toronto, where he ran a revue theatre. He gradually retired from performing in the early 1990s, leaving a legacy tied to the popularization of Neapolitan song and to the memory of postwar Italian entertainment.
