About

Gloria Laura Vanderbilt was a multifaceted public figure: artist, writer, actress, fashion designer, heiress and American socialite. She became known as a child because of the controversial custody trial in the 1930s, which drew wide press attention and marked her life when custody was transferred to her aunt Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Raised amid the luxury of Long Island and New York City, she trained at the Art Students League and pursued a career in the visual arts with exhibitions and licensed work for textiles and decorative objects.

In the commercial phase of her career, Vanderbilt launched in the 1970s a fashion line that included scarves, perfumes and, above all, one of the first designer jeans lines, her signature helping to popularize the concept of brand in ready‑to‑wear clothing. As founder of GV Ltd., she expanded the label into clothing, accessories and fragrances, and also faced commercial litigation that resulted in court-ordered damages.

Author of books on art, memoirs, novels and short stories, she left a legacy in both the arts and the fashion and licensing industries, remembered for her ability to turn her social inheritance into creative and commercial projects that influenced trends of the twentieth century.
