About

Charles II (Karl Ludwig Friedrich) was Grand Duke of Baden from 1811 to 1818, succeeding his grandfather Charles Frederick. Born into a dynastic family of considerable European standing, he was the only surviving son of the Hereditary Prince Charles Louis and Margravine Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt; his sisters married into courts such as Bavaria, Russia and Sweden, strengthening Baden’s dynastic ties during the Napoleonic era.

In his youth he traveled to the courts of Saint Petersburg and Stockholm and, in 1807, commanded the Baden contingent under Marshal Lefebvre, taking part in the Siege of Danzig. French influence at court led to his politically significant marriage in 1806 to Stéphanie de Beauharnais, Napoléon’s adopted daughter, despite family opposition.

A co-regent from 1808, he formally assumed government in 1811 and kept the House of Baden in place amid the complex post-Revolution European landscape. He had five daughters; the lack of a male heir resulted in the succession of his uncle Louis I after his death in 1818. Later rumors that Kaspar Hauser was his son were discredited.
