About

Nicholas Nikolayevich Romanov was a member of the high Russian nobility and a prominent military commander during World War I. A grandson of Tsar Nicholas I, he initially served as commander‑in‑chief of the Russian forces on the main front, a role that involved strategic decisions, logistical coordination and liaison with the government at a time of extreme wartime pressure.

In 1915, after heavy losses and the German‑Austro offensive at Gorlice‑Tarnów, he was replaced in army leadership by Tsar Nicholas II but regained standing as commander of the Caucasus front, where he achieved operational successes against Ottoman forces. His conduct received foreign recognition, including from figures such as Paul von Hindenburg.

Married to Princess Anastasia of Montenegro, he had no children. After the 1917 revolution he went into exile aboard the battleship sent by the United Kingdom to evacuate members of the imperial family from Crimea. In 1922, a monarchist council proclaimed him “Emperor of All the Russias,” a symbolic act with no practical effect because of the abolition of the monarchy. He lived the remainder of his life in exile and died in France in 1929.
