About

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter associated with the circle of Impressionists, known both for his artistic work and for the role he played as a patron in the final decades of the 19th century. Born into a wealthy family, he inherited means that gave him financial independence, allowing him to paint without commercial pressure and to support colleagues such as Monet, Renoir and Pissarro, as well as to fund Impressionist exhibitions.

His work moves between realism and the optical interests he shared with the Impressionists: domestic and urban scenes, interiors and landscapes of Yerres, but above all views of Paris — paintings such as The Floor Scrapers, Le Pont de l'Europe and Paris Street; Rainy Day stand out for their deep perspective, unexpected framings and the influence of photography and Japanese prints.

In the 1880s his painting activity declined: he devoted himself to gardening, yacht building and other hobbies. After his death, his reputation as a painter was only reassessed decades later; he bequeathed an important collection of works that passed to European and American institutions, helping preserve and secure recognition for the Impressionist corpus.
