About

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American writer central to the genres of weird fiction, fantasy, science fiction, and horror, whose work spawned the so-called Cthulhu Mythos. Born and based in New England, he wrote short stories and novellas that developed cosmicism: the idea that humanity is insignificant before incomprehensible cosmic forces. That philosophical focus, combined with elements of fantasy and science, defined works such as The Call of Cthulhu, At the Mountains of Madness, The Shadow over Innsmouth, and The Shadow Out of Time.

Although he was active in pulp publications and largely unknown during his lifetime—unable to support himself solely by writing—Lovecraft exerted strong influence on later horror fiction. His literary circle and the magazine Weird Tales were important vehicles for his work; it was only after his death that his writings experienced a critical revival beginning in the 1970s.

Lovecraft’s legacy includes numerous adaptations, followers, and derivative works that expanded the Mythos, alongside ongoing debates about his political and racial views, which coexist with the aesthetic and conceptual significance of his contribution to twentieth-century horror literature.
