About
Hannah Höch (Anna Therese Johanne Höch) was a German artist associated with the Dada movement and a pioneer of photomontage. Trained in applied arts in Berlin, she developed collage and photo-assembly techniques that made her a central figure in the European avant-gardes of the interwar period.
Active in Berlin’s Dada circle from 1915, she contributed to the movement’s publications and took part in group exhibitions that helped define Dada’s disruptive aesthetics. During the 1920s she lived in several artistic capitals — including Rome, Prague and Paris — where she built ties with other modernists.
Under National Socialism she remained in Germany largely out of public view; her works were labeled “degenerate” and she was only able to exhibit publicly again after 1946. Throughout her career Höch explored themes of female identity, gender roles and social representation, challenging stereotypes through the juxtaposition of images.
Although she received limited institutional recognition in her lifetime, her work left a lasting influence on twentieth-century photographic and artistic practices, establishing her as a key figure in discussions of gender and modernity.
