About

Hans Arp (Jean Pierre Guillaume Arp) was a multidisciplinary artist born in Alsace, known as a poet, painter and sculptor who worked across Dadaism, Surrealism and geometric abstraction. Fluent in French and German, he trained in Strasbourg and Paris, early on joining European avant‑garde circles and contributing to experimental publications.

During the First World War he settled in Zurich and became part of the Dadaist milieu; in the 1920s he moved closer to the Surrealists and established his practice in Paris. From the 1930s he expanded his formal experiments in collages and relief graphics, and in the 1940s and 1950s he turned intensively to sculpture, exploring organic and abstract forms.

His international recognition grew in the 1950s and 1960s, with exhibitions in New York and Paris that confirmed his influence on modern art. Naturalized French in 1926, Arp left a lasting legacy as an innovator of twentieth‑century visual language, with a body of work spanning poetry, image and object.
