About

Hans‑Georg Gadamer was a German philosopher and a central figure in twentieth‑century philosophical hermeneutics. His most influential work, Truth and Method (1960), set out a philosophy of understanding that extended hermeneutics beyond textual interpretation, arguing for the distinctiveness and cognitive value of the humanities in opposition to scientism. In that book Gadamer examines how art and tradition play crucial roles in the constitution of truth and human understanding.

Over his academic career he held chairs at several German universities, succeeding Karl Jaspers at Heidelberg, and maintained an active editorial and public presence, founding the journal Philosophische Rundschau in 1953. His influence reaches beyond philosophy to aesthetics, law, medicine, and education, and his work engaged in debates with thinkers such as Habermas and Derrida.

Gadamer’s intellectual life was also marked by ties and tensions with Martin Heidegger and by a cautious stance toward the political regimes in Germany during the 1930s–40s. Honored with numerous awards and distinctions, he remained academically active for decades, establishing a lasting legacy in the theory of interpretation and the humanities.
