About

Harold Courlander was an American novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist noted for his ethnographic research on African, Caribbean, African American, Native American, and Haitian cultures. The author of about 35 books and plays as well as numerous articles, he focused mainly on the study of oral literature, religious practices, music, and dance, recording oral traditions and field recordings that helped preserve little-documented popular repertoires.

His work on Haiti, including Haiti Singing (1939) and The Drum and the Hoe (1960), became a standard reference for the study of African survivals and Haitian cultural expression. Over several decades he made more than 20 trips to the country and led sound-documentation projects for the Ethnic Folkways Library, producing ethnographic albums from various world regions.

In the southwestern United States, his research with the Hopi resulted in the collection People of the Short Blue Corn (1970), valued in the study of Indigenous oral literature. He also worked in information agencies during and after World War II, including the Office of War Information and the Voice of America.

Courlander is remembered both for his scholarly and literary output and for his involvement in a copyright lawsuit against Alex Haley that sparked debate about influence and literary appropriation.
