About

Harry Joseph Middleton Jr. was an American journalist, author and cultural administrator whose career was defined by his close association with President Lyndon B. Johnson and by his leadership of the Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum. As a speechwriter and aide on the presidential staff from 1967 to 1969, he contributed to messages to Congress and to the preparation of two books by Johnson, and continued to accompany the former president as Special Assistant after the administration.

In 1970 he was appointed director of the LBJ Library, a post he held from 1971 to 2002. Under his management the institution established itself as a leader in opening presidential records, overseeing the declassification of hundreds of thousands of pages and, in 1993, the release of 642 hours of telephone recordings that deepened public understanding of the politics and diplomacy of the Johnson era.

Middleton also led the Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation (1993–2004) and created research-support initiatives such as the Harry Middleton Fellowship. He received institutional honors, including the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive, and left a lasting legacy in the professionalization and prominence of the presidential libraries.
