About

Heinz Brandt was an officer in the German Army whose career moved from the cavalry tradition into the senior ranks of the General Staff during the Second World War. Trained in the Reichswehr and an Olympic equestrian who won team gold in show jumping at the 1936 Games, he initially became known for his connections to artillery and cavalry before taking on planning and operations roles at high command.

As a staff officer he was progressively promoted to the rank of colonel, serving as a close aide to General Adolf Heusinger. His presence in the conference room of the headquarters in East Prussia on 20 July 1944 proved decisive: when he shifted the briefcase containing the explosive left by Claus von Stauffenberg, Brandt received fatal injuries and died the following day.

Subsequent official investigations did not identify him as complicit in the conspiracy against Hitler, although historians debate how much he knew about resistance circles. His death and the circumstances of the assassination attempt made him a figure remembered both for his military career and for his involuntary role in the episode that marked the attempt to overthrow the Nazi regime.
