About

Hélène Cixous is a Franco-Algerian writer and thinker known as one of the pioneers of European feminism and for her prolific, experimental output. A professor and co-founder in 1969 of the University of Paris VIII (Vincennes), she established there the first European center devoted to women’s studies, marking her institutional role in academia and culture.

Author of more than sixty books spanning essay, drama, poetry, autobiography and literary criticism, Cixous became famous for the essay Le Rire de la Méduse (1976), a key work of post-structuralist feminism, and for novels and plays that probe identity, memory and writing. Her first novel, Dedans, won the Prix Médicis.

Over the course of her career she collaborated with artists and intellectuals such as Jacques Derrida and with notable theater directors, and she led long-running seminars at institutions including the Collège International de Philosophie and the European Graduate School. Recognized internationally, she has received honorary degrees from foreign universities and is frequently mentioned among candidates for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
