About

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau, known as “Le Douanier,” was a self‑taught French painter associated with Post‑Impressionism and often labeled a naïf or primitivist artist. A former customs inspector, Rousseau left that work to devote himself full‑time to painting in middle age, confronting critical incomprehension and rejection by official institutions. His career only began to gain attention in alternative exhibitions such as the Salon des Indépendants, and he received occasional praise from figures like Pissarro, Gauguin and, later, Picasso.

Rousseau’s work is characterized by fantasy jungle scenes and landscapes, frontal compositions and a detailed rendering of elements that privileges clarity and flat surfaces over academic perspective. This apparent technical naiveté coexists with a dense, symbolic imagery in which exotic nature, mystery and sometimes menace mingle in ordered, almost botanical arrangements.

In addition to jungle scenes, he produced still lifes, portrait‑landscapes and social subjects, continually seeking recognition and a pictorial expression free from canonical rules. Rousseau’s legacy lies in the originality of his vision and the influence he exerted on later generations, who saw in his “naiveté” a powerful alternative to academic tradition.
