About

Herb Geller was an American jazz saxophonist, composer and arranger whose career encompassed recordings, big bands and teaching. Emerging in the 1950s, he won DownBeat magazine’s “New Star” award in 1955 and reached an international audience through collaborations with figures such as Clifford Brown, while also leading sessions for the EmArcy label.

Raised on the Los Angeles scene and with a spell in New York, he worked with major ensembles and players on the jazz circuit — including Shorty Rogers, Maynard Ferguson, Bill Holman, Quincy Jones and Chet Baker. In Europe he settled in cities such as Paris and, above all, Hamburg, where he spent nearly three decades as a soloist, arranger and member of the NDR big band, helping to make it one of Europe’s most important modern jazz ensembles.

Beyond performing, Geller expanded his instrumental range, wrote musicals, authored an improvisation method and taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg, receiving the honorary title of “Professor” from the city’s Senate. His legacy includes landmark recordings, collaborations with key jazz figures and pedagogical influence on the twentieth‑century European jazz scene.
