About

Hermann Fegelein was an officer of the Waffen-SS in Nazi Germany, known for his rise within the police-military apparatus and for belonging to the inner circle of Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Hitler. He began his career in the cavalry and the Bavarian police, joining the National Socialist Party and the SS in the early 1930s; he later commanded the SS riding school in Munich and oversaw the stud farm at Fischhorn Castle.

Fegelein served on the Eastern Front in 1943 with the cavalry division “Florian Geyer” and received military decorations, including the Cavalry Cross with Swords. His closeness to Himmler made him a visible figure in Nazi power circles; he also performed representative duties for the Waffen-SS with Hitler and, in the war’s final months, controlled access to the Führer’s office alongside Martin Bormann.

During the regime’s collapse he was detained in Berlin while attempting to flee with documents and valuables; returned to the bunker, he was accused of treason after Himmler’s attempts to negotiate with the Allies. The circumstances of his death on 29 April 1945 remain controversial in historical accounts, requiring critical reappraisal of the sources.
