About

Hermann Wilhelm Göring was a German military officer and politician, a leading figure of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) and one of the principal leaders of the Third Reich. A World War I veteran, he distinguished himself as a pilot and commander of fighter units, receiving decorations such as the Pour le Mérite. In the 1930s he assumed central roles in the Nazi regime: he established the state secret police and, in 1935, was appointed commander‑in‑chief of the Luftwaffe, a post he held for almost the entire Second World War.

As minister responsible for the Four Year Plan, Göring had broad responsibility for the war economy and, in 1941, Hitler invested him with the title of Reichsmarschall and with succession prerogatives. From 1942 his position weakened due to the failures of the German air force against Allied bombing and the lack of success in operations such as the attempted relief of Stalingrad.

At the end of the war he focused on acquiring properties and art collections, many obtained through the confiscation of victims of the regime. Tried at Nuremberg for war crimes and crimes against humanity, he was sentenced to death; before the execution he committed suicide by ingesting cyanide.
