About

Hildegard E. Peplau was an American nurse and theorist whose work transformed psychiatric nursing. Known for formulating the mid-range theory of interpersonal relations, Peplau shifted practice away from a purely custodial role toward a therapeutic approach centered on nurse–patient interaction. That conceptual framework influenced education, research, and clinical practice, establishing standards for interviews and for individual, family, and group interventions.

Initially trained in nursing and in interpersonal psychology, Peplau deepened her knowledge of psychiatry through clinical experience and contact with theorists such as Harry Stack Sullivan. During and after World War II she worked in military institutions and participated in mental health reform in the United States, advocating humane treatment for behavioral and personality disorders.

In academia, she created the first graduate program for clinical specialists in psychiatric nursing at Rutgers, taught graduate-level courses, and led national workshops. She held consultancy positions with organizations such as the World Health Organization and served as president of the American Nurses Association (1970–1972). Her legacy endures in the emphasis on advanced training and the therapeutic dimension of nursing.
