About

Hubert Auriol was a French motorcycle and automobile racer nicknamed “l’Africain,” known for his participation in the Paris–Dakar Rally from the 1970s to the 1990s. As a two‑wheel competitor he won the event in 1981 and 1983; later he switched to cars and won the 1992 edition, becoming the first person to win the rally both as a motorcycle rider and as a car driver. His racing career featured intense rivalries—especially with Cyril Neveu—and serious crashes, including fractures to both shins in 1987 that forced him to give up motorcycles.

Beyond his victories, Auriol was notable for his talent in building teams and developing technical projects, such as founding the Cagiva Lucky Explorer team and using engine solutions that were unconventional for the time. After ending his top‑level driving career, he served as sporting director of the Paris–Dakar from 1995 to 2004, a role in which he influenced the event’s organization and international profile.

His legacy is twofold: pioneering competitive success across different rally categories and contributing to the Dakar’s establishment as a benchmark long‑distance rally. He also appeared occasionally in the media as a TV presenter, which reinforced his public notoriety.
