James Hugh Calum Laurie, CBE, is a British actor, comedian, writer and musician whose career ranges from university theatre to international television stardom. Trained in anthropology at Cambridge, he rose to prominence in the Footlights club, where he began a creative partnership with Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson that opened the way to comedy and television work in the 1980s and 1990s.
Laurie became widely known for his role as Dr. Gregory House in the series House (2004–2012), a performance that earned him two Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild awards and multiple Emmy nominations, and established him as one of the most viewed and highest-paid television actors of his time. Before that, he built a strong career in sketch comedy, including A Bit of Fry & Laurie, and in period series such as Jeeves and Wooster.
In addition to his acting career, Laurie has worked in film and music videos and is an award-winning musician, with projects that reflect his versatile background. His prominence stems from both his comic gifts and dramatic talent, and he has left a mark on British comedy and international television.
