About

Hugo Wolf was an Austrian composer whose work focused chiefly on the Lied — the song for voice and piano — which renewed the tradition of Schubert and Schumann by using a more advanced harmonic language and strong Wagnerian influence. Despite a life marked by financial hardship and strained relations with figures such as Johannes Brahms, he produced a notable body of song cycles that became recognized for their dramatic intensity and close attention to the poetic text.

His vocal output includes central groups such as the Mörike-Lieder, Goethe-Lieder, Eichendorff-Lieder, the Spanisches Liederbuch and the Italienisches Liederbuch; together they comprise hundreds of pieces that form his principal legacy. He also composed instrumental and choral music, notably a string quartet and works such as the Italian Serenade.

In 1895 he wrote the opera Der Corregidor, and in the years that followed he suffered mental disorders that led to institutionalization. His early death in 1903 cut short a career whose importance grew posthumously through performers and scholars of the Lied, securing Wolf a prominent place in nineteenth-century vocal literature.
