About

Hugues Aufray is a French singer, songwriter and guitarist whose career shaped the reception of folk song in 1960s France. Known for his French-language interpretations of Bob Dylan’s repertoire, Aufray brought French audiences closer to American folk and protest songs while preserving the rawness and energy of the originals. Among his best-known hits are “Santiano,” “Céline,” “Stewball” and “Hasta Luego.”

Shaped by multicultural experiences — including time in Madrid and direct contact with musicians in New York — he also worked as a songwriter and arranger for other performers before establishing himself as a star in his own right. He represented Luxembourg at the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing fourth, and took part in public initiatives such as a benefit concert against racism in support of Martin Luther King Jr.

His artistic relationship with Bob Dylan resulted in albums of translations and stage collaborations, reinforcing his role as a promoter of a folk-rock aesthetic within the French musical scene. Recognition of his career includes awards and honors, highlighting a legacy of bringing foreign songs into the francophone repertoire and influencing later generations of performers.
