About

Inessa Armand was a French-born communist politician who became known as a Bolshevik activist and feminist in revolutionary Russia. A close associate of Lenin, she worked as an organizer and administrator of the movement: she served as secretary of the Committee of Foreign Organizations, edited the newspaper Rabotnitsa, and represented the Bolsheviks at international socialist conferences, where she defended uncompromising stances against opportunism and the war.

After the 1917 Revolution, she held executive posts in Moscow, chaired the Economic Council, and sat on the municipal Soviet. She became the first director of the Zhenotdel, the body charged with promoting women’s rights within the party and trade unions, and pushed practical reforms — from collective services to legal measures on divorce and abortion — aimed at women’s emancipation and their integration into work and public life.

Armand also organized congresses and publications for communist women, including the journal Kommunistka, seeking to transform gender relations in the new Soviet state. Her intense political and social agenda was cut short: she died of cholera in 1920 and was buried with a state funeral.
