About

Infanta of Spain and Duchess of Galliera, María Eulalia emerged as a controversial figure in the Spanish monarchy of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The youngest daughter of Queen Isabella II, she became known as the “Republican Infanta” for her progressive positions and her conflicts with members of the royal family, which led to disputes with her sister Isabella and with her nephew, King Alfonso XIII.

She married Antonio of Orléans in 1886 in an unhappy union that ended in legal separation in 1911 — a rare occurrence within the royal family. The author of memoirs and socially oriented works, she published a book in Paris defending the dignity of women, divorce, and social issues, which provoked strong reactions from the conservative press and resulted in a de facto exile imposed by Alfonso XIII.

A keen traveler, she played diplomatic roles on official missions to the former colonies and maintained relations with various European monarchs. After regaining financial control, she spent her final years in Irun, where she died in 1958, leaving a legacy of intellectual independence and criticism of traditional institutions.
