Ingvar Kamprad was a Swedish businessman best known as the founder of IKEA, the company that transformed furniture manufacturing and retail by popularizing affordable, flat-pack furniture sold through a catalog-based retail model with in-store cafés. His name became a brand: the initials and geographic references formed the acronym IKEA, which came to symbolize an operation that began in Sweden and expanded to dozens of countries.
In the 1950s and 1960s Kamprad introduced logistical and commercial innovations — such as flat-pack components, the use of names for products, and fixed catalog prices — that lowered costs and enabled international expansion. He encountered resistance from the domestic furniture industry and turned to suppliers abroad, notably in Poland, which helped strengthen the company’s competitiveness.
Throughout his life he was also involved in controversy: his youthful membership in far-right movements, revealed decades later, prompted him to apologize and publicly clarify the episode. Known for his personal wealth in international rankings, Kamprad left a lasting impact on retail and furniture design, as well as cultural influence in Sweden.
