About
Ish Kabibble was the stage name of Merwyn Alton Bogue, an American comedian and cornetist active mainly in the 1930s and 1940s. He became known for a comic persona of a clumsy fool that contrasted with his musical skill: he was a prominent instrumentalist and business manager for Kay Kyser’s orchestra, and also took part in the band’s recordings, radio programs, and the short-lived television series Kyser mounted in 1949–50.
Bogue appeared in about ten films between 1939 and 1950, showing both vocal talent and stage presence in productions such as That’s Right—You’re Wrong and Thousands Cheer. During Kyser’s orchestra hiatus he worked briefly with Spike Jones’s band but chose to return to the ensemble that had made him famous. In his autobiography he explained the jocular origin of his stage name, derived from a humorous expression with no real connection to Yiddish.
With the decline of the big bands he reshaped his career: he continued as a solo comedian and, beginning in the 1960s, entered the real estate business, where he found success and reinvented his public role. His legacy survives in cultural references and small tributes, reflecting the combination of musical talent, entertainment career, and professional adaptability.
