About

Jack Smith was a filmmaker, actor, and a central figure in American underground cinema, recognized as one of the founders of performance art in the United States. His best-known work, Flaming Creatures (1963), satirized Hollywood B-movies and celebrated drag culture while facing censorship and police seizures for scenes deemed pornographic, sparking national controversy and mentions at Congressional hearings.

Throughout the 1960s he made short films and an almost conventional feature, Normal Love, collaborating with names from the underground circuit such as Mario Montez, Tiny Tim, and John Vaccaro. He also acted in films by peers like Andy Warhol and Ken Jacobs, and took part in experimental theater by Robert Wilson.

Beyond cinema, Smith worked as a photographer and ran a studio in New York; he published The Beautiful Book (1962) and maintained an archive whose preservation and ownership became disputed after his death. His improvised aesthetic, influenced by Hollywood kitsch and orientalism, helped legitimize camp and trash sensibilities and influenced filmmakers such as Andy Warhol and John Waters.
