About

Jacqueline Auriol was a French test pilot and one of the most prominent aviators of the postwar era. Trained initially in the arts, she turned to aviation after World War II and, after surviving a serious 1949 accident that required extensive surgery, devoted herself to the technical study needed to work as a professional pilot. In 1951 she became the first woman officially employed as a test pilot in France.

Over two decades, Auriol set speed records that brought her international renown, including breaking the sound barrier and reaching 2,038.7 km/h aboard a Dassault Mirage in 1963. Between 1951 and 1963 she set five women's world records in various types of fighter aircraft, often on circuits at Istres, and won the Harmon Trophy four times.

Recognized for the technical and symbolic significance of her achievements, she received high French honors, including the dignity of Grand Officer of the Légion d’honneur and the Grand Cross of the Ordre national du Mérite. Her autobiography and posthumous tributes attest to her legacy as a pioneer among women in high‑performance aviation.
