Jacqueline Susann was an American writer and actress, known for turning themes from show business and popular culture into major publishing phenomena. She achieved wide recognition with Valley of the Dolls (1966), a saga about three women and the use of amphetamines and barbiturates that became one of the best‑selling books in U.S. publishing history. Her subsequent novels, The Love Machine (1969) and Once Is Not Enough (1973), reinforced her success: she was the first author to place three consecutive novels at the top of The New York Times bestseller list.
Before her literary breakthrough, Susann performed on Broadway and on television, appearing in theatrical productions, variety shows and commercials. That experience in the entertainment world fed her fiction, which features characters rooted in show business and probes ambition, vanity and social scandal. She also published affectionate memoirs, such as Every Night, Josephine!, about her poodle, which increased her popularity with a broad readership.
Although most of her work drew unfavorable critical reviews, Susann's commercial and cultural impact is indisputable: her career altered perceptions of the mass‑market publishing business and the commercial appeal of sensational narratives centered on celebrities, prompting lasting debate about popularity versus literary prestige.
