About

Jacques Demy was a French filmmaker, screenwriter and lyricist associated with the Nouvelle Vague, whose work was distinguished by a fusion of musical lyricism and a melancholic sensibility. He became renowned for two 1960s musicals — Les Parapluies de Cherbourg and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort — which combine continuous song, Michel Legrand’s lush scores and a saturated visual palette, creating a world where everyday melodrama blends with Hollywood imagery and fairy-tale elements.

From his first feature, Lola, recurring motifs emerge: characters who reappear across different films, the theme of chance encounters and fate, and the Atlantic coast of France as an emotional setting. Films such as La Baie des Anges and Model Shop explore variations on the theme of chance and temporal dislocation, while Peau d’Âne and Lady Oscar reveal his interest in fantasy and political and gender subtext.

Although only a few titles received immediate acclaim, Demy’s work was reissued and reassessed over time, receiving restorations and critical editions that highlighted his aesthetic originality. Married to director Agnès Varda, he left a legacy defined by the interplay of music, melodrama and a personal mythology of French cinema.
