Jacques Lacan

About

Jacques-Marie Émile Lacan was a French psychoanalyst.

Trained in medicine, he moved from neurology to psychiatry, having been a student of Gatian de Clérambault.

He came into contact with psychoanalysis through surrealism and, beginning in 1951, asserting that the post-Freudians had gone astray, proposed a return to Freud. To this end he drew on the linguistics of Saussure (and later Jakobson and Benveniste) and the structural anthropology of Lévi-Strauss, becoming an important figure of Structuralism.

Later he turned to logic and topology.
