Jacques Ochs

About

Jacques Martin Ochs was a Belgian artist and caricaturist of French origin, also remembered for a notable career as a fencer. Trained at the Academies of Fine Arts in Liège and Paris, he first gained recognition as a painter and draughtsman, winning academic prizes and publishing caricatures and illustrations that made him a central figure in the Belgian press. His satirical drawings graced the front page of the weekly Pourquoi Pas? for decades, cementing his public reputation.

Alongside his artistic work, Ochs built a high-level sporting career: he became an Olympic team champion in fencing in 1912, a world champion and multiple-time Belgian champion, before ending his competitive career after an air accident in 1927. During the First World War he served as an aerial observer and recorded scenes from the front in drawings.

As an educator and administrator, he was a professor and director of the Liège Academy of Fine Arts and curator of the local Museum of Fine Arts, taking part in the acquisition of significant works in 1939. Persecuted during the Second World War because of his Jewish origin, he joined the resistance, was arrested and interned at Breendonk, and survived the occupation. After 1944 he resumed producing graphic work until vision problems forced him to retire.
