About

James Coburn was an American actor whose 45-year career encompassed more than 70 films and roughly 100 television appearances. Tall and laconic in presence, he became known for action and western roles, often playing cool, skilled, charismatic characters that helped shape the era’s cinematic aesthetic.

His repertoire includes landmark titles such as The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Charade, Hell Is for Heroes, The President's Analyst, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and Giù la testa. In the 1960s he rose to stardom with Our Man Flint and its sequel In Like Flint, films that popularized his “laid-back” image alongside contemporaries like Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood.

Coburn’s career experienced a late revival and received formal recognition when he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1998 for Affliction; he also worked as a producer, earning an Emmy nomination in 2002 for The Mists of Avalon. His legacy remains tied to a distinctive screen presence and to roles that helped define the antihero archetype in action and western cinema.
